Hardwood Styles

One of the most unique aspects of hardwood is its versatility. There are many styles that will help you achieve different looks. Distressed wood, for example, gives a rustic look to any room while other styles lend elegance and sophistication. Hardwood comes in many textures including wire-brushed, hand-scraped, and more.

Hardwood Species

Many species of wood are used to create hardwood flooring. Generally, hardwood is split into two categories: dark woods and light woods. Common dark wood species include cherry, walnut, mahogany, and hickory. Common light wood species include maple, oak, and pine.

Solid vs. Engineered Hardwood

Solid hardwood consists of planks that are made using a single, solid piece of wood. Solid hardwood is typically ¾-inch in thickness, meaning that it can be sanded down and refinished time and again throughout the course of its lifespan. While costlier, it's considered a worthwhile investment.

Engineered hardwood, on the other hand, consists of multiple layers of wood and wood-based products. While engineered hardwood is not as durable, it is more versatile and moisture-resistant. It is also thinner, so it cannot be sanded and refinished repeatedly. However, many homeowners enjoy its affordability.
